HDI Extremely Robust and Reliable Hail Sensor

The HDI sensor measures the impact of individual hailstones on a stainless steel disc using a special acoustic detector that processes and calculates the signals. The detection surface is an omnidirectional head, 200 mm in diameter, which houses the system electronics.

The HDI detects hail between 0.5 and 7.5 cm and up to 25 impacts per second. Much like disdrometry, it distinguishes 15 size classes. The size distribution is reported as a percentage of all detected impacts, according to the classification table.
