Built to shield temperature logger iButtons (DS1921 and DS1922 series) from moisture, solvents and pressure, the iButton® Capsule is a mechanical enclosure in three parts: a base with a cavity for one F5 iButton, a screw-in plug with an O-ring that seals it, and a top with two stainless-steel screws for hanging the capsule on a cable, for example to measure temperature at several levels in a liquid. The cable sits in the plug's notch and is locked in place by the matching protrusion on the top piece.

Materials

Base, plug and top are made from polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), selected because it:

stays mechanically stable under both long and short exposure to high temperatures
is inherently flame resistant
offers outstanding chemical resistance, being inert to steam, strong bases, fuels and acids

PPS is virtually insoluble below 200°C, although chlorinated hydrocarbons can attack it. The silicone O-ring is matched to the thermal and chemical qualities of the PPS and also withstands sunlight, ozone, oxygen and UV light. The screws are chemically stable enough not to compromise the PPS or the silicone.
